194 rooms and suites, a 1,000 m2 conference\u00a0centre, a Spa by Clarins with an indoor pool, saunas\u00a0and steam baths, private terraces and fabulous\u00a0views of the Vieux-Port and the Notre-Dame de la\u00a0Garde Basilica!\u00a0The Intercontinental Marseille<\/strong> is most certainly a genuine 5 star hotel\u00a0offering all the services associated with this type of\u00a0establishment.\u00a0But it offers much more: the chance to be part\u00a0of this city\u2019s history that has been preserved and\u00a0indeed enhanced. The majestic stairways, vaulted\u00a0corridors, French gardens and terraces of this\u00a0magnificent building all bear witness to its own\u00a0unique history.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Reawakening the Hotel Dieu<\/h2>\n

Transforming a building so steeped in history was complex : everything in the former Hotel-Dieu<\/strong> had to be restored, enhanced and preserved to ensure their use in the Intercontinental Marseille<\/strong>.\u00a0Marseille<\/strong> city\u2019s authorities wished to transform\u00a0the Hotel-Dieu<\/strong> in order to boost its overall hotel\u00a0capacity to host international visitors. The ultimate\u00a0goal was to ensure that Marseille<\/strong> would become a\u00a0leading destination for world-wide tourism.<\/p>\n

The terraces were entirely rebuilt, while the halflevels on the two wings were removed to restore the building to its former glory, particularly those parts of the building that now house the main suites. The restoration also restored the fa\u00e7ades to their original aspect, the windows and French doors are identical to those in the 18th century drawings. The rear of the building, disfigured by extensions to the hospital in the 1960s, was the ideal place for the hotel car park, not marring in the slightest any history here.<\/p>\n

The idea of the Intercontinental Marseille- Hotel Dieu<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0to connect this same history to the new role of a\u00a0hotel, while assuring a cer tain coherence with the\u00a0original building, architecturally. The mineral character\u00a0of the H\u00f4tel Dieu<\/strong>, seen in the magnificent fa\u00e7ades of\u00a0Cassis and La Couronne stone with their effective\u00a0colonnades, imbue the project with a spirit and\u00a0provide a sense of identity for the new hotel Intercontinental Marseille<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The aim in reviving this structure was to provide\u00a0a vital asset for Marseille, to welcome visitors and\u00a0provide a suitable venue for conventions, cultural\u00a0events and festivals in the city. The interior patio\u00a0serves as a shady terrace that, in winter, extends into\u00a0the area provided by the glass wall with the bar and\u00a0meeting rooms along the side.<\/p>\n

Rooms & Suites combining prestige and tradition<\/h2>\n

The Intercontinental Marseille<\/strong> features 172 rooms and 22 suites.\u00a0The interior design combines 5 star luxury\u00a0and the character of this unique setting.\u00a0The city of Marseille<\/strong> and the\u00a0Mediterranean sea inspired the distinctive\u00a0flair and subtlety found here that still\u00a0retains its inherent character.\u00a0The decoration is the very essence of\u00a0Marseille<\/strong> and Provence, in a truly typical\u00a0setting full of the history of the city and\u00a0the surrounding region.<\/p>\n

You sense that every detail in the decorative\u00a0elements, from the light to the colour, has\u00a0been selected according to a procedure that\u00a0follows \u201cconcentric circles\u201d, from Marseille<\/strong>, to\u00a0Provence, and then extends to all of France, but\u00a0that\u2019s not all…\u00a0You also understand that all of the elements,\u00a0both visible and invisible, of the decor and\u00a0the interior architecture are notes in a\u00a0sophisticated composition, which is none other\u00a0than the atmosphere exuded by the site itself.\u00a0When you enter your room, you will feel the\u00a0heart of the city of Marseille<\/strong> beating in every\u00a0element, no matter how slight. Each of your\u00a0senses will feel harmony with the city and\u00a0everything it represents.<\/p>\n

The decoration of the rooms and suites evokes both\u00a0the the history of the place (retro style bathtubs\u00a0and embroidered throws) and the refinement\u00a0offered, (bathrooms that open onto the guest rooms,\u00a0mirrors, and full length living walls).<\/p>\n

Composed of two areas that blend easily into one\u00a0another : the bedroom and the bathroom. Guests\u00a0can adjust the setting and make the room their\u00a0own according to personal choice. The rooms are\u00a0in anthracite and pale stone tones in harmony with\u00a0the Intercontinental Marseille<\/strong>\u2019s overall colour scheme. The white leather\u00a0headboard is reminiscent of ancient times, old yet\u00a0new and a bedspread embroidered in a design\u00a0inspired by the traditions of Provence.<\/p>\n

Shutters that open and close off the bathroom at\u00a0will evoke the traditional fa\u00e7ades throughout the\u00a0city.\u00a0The enamelled lava wash basin echoes the design\u00a0of the tiles, inspired by the traditional Barcelona\u00a0tiles with their delicate inset designs redolent of\u00a0the traces of time and ancient craftsmanship. The\u00a0traditional enamelled cast iron bathtub is yet another\u00a0reference to the past in an unending dialogue with\u00a0the modernity of its design.<\/p>\n
