The 48M SuperSport superyacht: fast, efficient and sublime

Palmer Johnson, the historic and innovative American superyacht manufacturer, exhibited its outstanding 48M carbon fibre SuperSport superyacht during the Singapore Yacht Show. Over the last decade, Palmer Johnson has revolutionized its brand with a growing fleet of Sportyachts: fast, modern and technologically advanced vessels with a distinctive aesthetic and appeal.

In 2012, the company evolved the concept by launching the SuperSport range: its next generation carbon fibre yachts that are faster, more efficient, more stable and more spacious.

Fast, efficient and sublime

Fast approaching its centenary in 2018, Palmer Johnson has a legacy that reaches back to the golden age of yachting in the 1920s and 1930s. The US-based company has delivered over 200 yachts, all of them still afloat, and many with historically important owners.

To redefine the future of yachting, Palmer Johnson wanted to create a yacht faster, more efficient, more stable and more spacious without compromising performance or comfort. The new Palmer Johnson 48M SuperSport superyacht has achieved this.

“The idea was to design a next generation Palmer Johnson superyacht that freed itself from the conventional compromises that yacht design generally seems to accept,” says Timur Mohamed, owner of the iconic American yacht brand and former first-class cricketer.

“Usually, efficient means slow; space and comfort mean a floating home with a forgettable design. Further, we decided to aim for exponential transformations in operational performance and the onboard experience, not incremental improvements.”

Finally, Mohamed wanted all this wrapped up in a package that was still recognisable as a muscular, sporty Palmer Johnson.

The 48M SuperSport by Palmer Johnson is three times more stable than a monohull thanks to its wave piercer displacement hull that reduces pitching and will be more comfortable, with no slamming as yacht goes through waves and not over them.

The 48M SuperSport boasts all of the features of the new SuperSport line with a top speed of 32 Knots, impressive efficiency at lower speeds and is capable of crossing the Atlantic at a speed of 15 Knots

Style

The look of the 48M SuperSport, as well as its properties, was important. This emphasis was part of Mohamed’s desire to “expose the soul of the yacht and express it in increasing layers of enjoyment, capturing the intense emotional relationship that one should have with a yacht”.

He believes that while the experience of a boat certainly includes the views from the aft deck or the saloon, it should start when tendering towards it: “An owner should get goose bumps every time they look at their yacht.”

On the new SuperSport 48M by Palmer Johnson, every surface is curved and finely shaped. The superyacht boasts a sculpted waistline and aggressive flair in the fore section, muscular haunches, a predatory stance and a sleek profile. The clean design hides yacht handling gear, keeping the decks clear for guests and potential charterers.

The interior space is also impressive with full length windows with open bulwarks in the Salon and Skylounge, enabling an incredible amount of light to permeate the interior, bringing the outside environment it. The Aft decks were also designed for indoor/outdoor living with sensational views through the haunches.

As well as the owner’s suite forward on the main deck, with full height windows, there are four guest cabins on the lower deck, as well as a tender garage, toy garage and beach club. There’s a bridge deck with upper saloon, plus a spa pool and optional helms position up top. In all the yacht will sleep 12 guests plus eight crew members and a captain.
